Aggressive and toxic chemicals are extremely damaging to the environment and to health should they be exposed.  

Examples of aggressive chemicals

  • acids: hydrofluoric
  •  sulphuric,
  • flammable liquids
  • strong alkalis

When selecting the correct gasket for use in chemical service, if the gasket is not compatible with the process media, chemical attack will begin to degrade it. Once this degradation begins, eventual failure of the gasket with resultant leakage is inevitable.   A familiarity with the chemical resistance of various gasket materials is essential.  Contact Flexitallic for a copy of the latest material chemical compatibility.

Conventional PTFE based sealing/gasket materials have long been the choice for superb chemical resistance, however they are not ideally suited as conventional PTFE has a tendency to creep or flow under pressure or load, especially at high temperatures (above 150°C).  This makes it more difficult to maintain a tight seal and can result in a shorter life for the PTFE components.

Often the material is required to be ‘clean’, making them suitable for use in industries where product contamination may be of concern such as food, pharmaceuticals and electronics.  Materials will therefore need to comply with the requirements of FDA regulations (Food & Drug Administration).
