The Metallic Ring Type Joint was initally developed for use in the petroleum industry, where high pressure/temperature application necessitated the need for a high intergrity seal.
They are mainly used in the oil field on drilling and completion equipment. Ring type joints are also commonly used on valves and pipework assemblies, along with some high integrity pressure vessel joints.

The primary seal is effected in the same manner as a standard ring type gasket.
A secondary highly conformable seal (Sigma606) is integrated into the gasket with a reinforced metallic serrated core which moulds itself to flange face deformation.
The secondary seal (Sigma606) is formulated to reduce the corrosion rates and effects.

A ring type joint gasket which closes the make up distance caused in typical RTJ connections, the integrated serrated metallic inner ring faced with Sigma606 ensures conformability to flange face irregularities and mitigates the eddy formation normally associated with the flow pattern in the area of these connections.
Typical Application

Main crude oil lines, sub sea installations, high pressure applications, can be used in any ring type jointed flange.

RTJ - Kamm

R style Octagonal RTJ with all 23 angles with Flexpro serrations and covered with high purity graphite. The serration provide a reliable seal under lower surface stress than a traditional RTJ product. Lower seating stress reduces the amount of flange deformation with traditional metallic gaskets. Differential in hardness of RTJ and flange less critical.
Typical Application

Developed to assist sealing on troublesome RTJ flange where flange condition less than ideal.

Style BX

The standard size BX style RTJs are machined to tight manufacturing tolerances in accordance with the relevant standards, to ensure correct installation in standard API 6B and ASME B16.5 Ring Type Flanges.

Many of the standard 20,000 psi rated BX style Octagonal RTJs in cross-section have a radial width the same as the height of the ring. The RTJs which have a height greater than the width have lower pressure ratings.

Materials of construction are selected to match the flange material and be resistant to the media. In addition, the material hardness of the RTJ is less than the hardness of the flanges to ensure the RTJ is deformed and not the flanges when assembled.

Non-standard size BX Style RTJs are specifically designed to be installed in flanges designed around a specific application rather than a standard flange size.
Typical Application

BX style RTJs are designed to seal pressures of up to 20,000 psi in accordance with ASME B16.20 and API 6A pressure ratings.

To assist in providing a tight seal, the profile of these gaskets is such that when assembled the two mating flanges are virtually closed (i.e. minimal stand-off distance). With this arrangement, a greatly reduced surface area of the RTJ material is exposed to the pipeline pressure. All sizes of the style BX RTJs have a pressure balance hole to equalise pressure that may become trapped in the flange grooves.

Typical high pressure and temperature applications where these gaskets are used include valve and pipe-work assemblies in oil field drilling and refining applications.

Style R

The standard size Oval and Octagonal RTJs are machined to tight manufacturing tolerances in accordance with the relevant standards, to ensure correct installation in standard API 6B and ASME B16.5 Ring Type Flanges.

Oval and Octagonal RTJs with the same ring size designation can be interchangeable in standard flanges with flat bottomed ring grooves. For the old style round bottomed grooves Oval RTJs only can be used.

Materials of construction are selected to match the flange material and to be resistant to the corrosive and erosive media. In addition, the material hardness of the RTJs is less than the hardness of the flanges to ensure the RTJ is deformed and not the flanges when assembled.

Non-standard size RTJs are specifically designed to be installed in flanges designed around a specific application rather than a standard flange.

The standard size RX style RTJs are machined to tight manufacturing tolerances in accordance with the relevant standards, to ensure correct installation in standard API 6B and ASME B16.5 Ring Type Flanges .

The RX style Octagonal RTJ is interchangeable with style R Oval and Octagonal RTJs with the same ring size designation number and can be inserted into standard flanges with flat bottomed ring grooves. As the RX style RTJs are much taller than standard style R RTJs, the stand-off distance between the mating flanges will be greater.

Non-standard size RTJs are specifically designed to be installed in flanges designed around a specific application rather than a standard flange size.

This non-standard style Oval and Octagonal RTJs are machined to tight manufacturing tolerances in accordance with the relevant standards, to ensure correct installation in mating flanges with different ring groove sizes. Typically, the pitch diameters of the grooves are the same or may differ slightly, however, any difference should be kept to a minimum.

They are selected to match the flange material and be resistant to the corrosive and erosive media. In addition, the material hardness of the RTJs is less than the hardness of the flanges to ensure the RTJ is deformed and not the flanges when assembled.

This style of non-standard size RTJs are specifically designed to be installed in flanges designed around a specific application rather than a standard flange.

Typical high pressure and temperature applications where the equipment / pipeline flanges do not exactly match but cannot be replaced due to cost or time restrictions. This may be due to repairs carried out on one of the two flanges and / or flanges supplied to different standards and / or sizes.
